“Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world.
Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.”
Rumi
Welcome to my website. I have tried to give you some sense of who I am and my thoughts on Psychotherapy. I hope this information will be helpful to you in your search for a Therapist.
Therapy can seem mysterious and intimidating. Many people feel that asking for help is a sign of weakness or an indication that they must be “crazy”. I think that we all suffer in one way or another. The world is tumultuous; life is filled with challenges and relationships are very demanding and difficult to navigate. Psychotherapy can be one way of addressing whatever unique distress you are experiencing.
I see my work as providing you with a safe respectful holding space to bring your concerns – a place where you can attend to and explore your innermost thoughts and feelings. Informed by my training and experience, I will help you to listen deeply to what you have to say (and to learn to know what you are not saying) and to attend to what feelings are emerging in you. Together we will be fiercely curious about all of you. We will explore what is making you feel “not right” – anxious, unhappy, sad, traumatized, angry, lonely, unfulfilled, limited or trapped. We will learn what you have been taught about who you are, who you should be and who you must be. We’ll tune in to the parts of yourself that have been cut off, forgotten or ignored and help you to reclaim them. We’ll sort through what you may be carrying from your past that needs and wants your attention as well as how you are relating to and being related to by others.
I believe that powerful change can and does occur within the context of the treatment relationship – the relationship that you and I create together. Within this context, you will have the opportunity to see old, painful patterns of relating emerge. Seeing and experiencing those patterns within the safety of our relationship will open the way for you to make more conscious choices about how you want to relate to yourself and others going forward.
The purpose of our work will be to clear away the limitations of thinking and experience that are holding you back from your own wholeness- your own sense of being fully alive and engaged in your life.
I am a Licensed Psychologist and a certified Psychoanalyst. I have been practicing psychotherapy in the Twin Cities for 30 years. During that time I have worked with individual adults, adolescents, couples and families who have sought my help for a variety of concerns. It is important to me to be continuously engaged in my own growth and in that spirit I receive frequent professional training and participate in peer consultation as well as Supervision of my own work.
